Identifying an EL student
All new students to the district (K-8) will be given a WIDA Screener. Below is a chart with the specific grade level, domain, and name of the screener.

Finally, if a student is identified as an English Learner (EL), we will provide the necessary services tailored to meet the individual needs of that student. According to the Illinois Administrative Code, Part 228, Section 228.15, districts must conduct an individual language proficiency assessment for each student identified through the Home Language Survey. This assessment should be completed within 30 days of the student's enrollment to determine eligibility for bilingual education services.
All new students will be tested within the first 2-3 weeks after they enroll. If a student does not reach the required scores, they will qualify for language support services.
If the Home Language Survey shows that Spanish is the student’s second language, they will also take the IPT Oral test in Spanish. This helps us understand which language they are stronger in and how to best place them in our programs.
For new preschool students, we administer the Pre-IPT Oral language proficiency test in English. This state-recommended test evaluates their listening and speaking skills in English and is also done within 2-3 weeks of starting school. The required score for eligibility depends on the child’s age at the time of the test. If Spanish is the second language, they will also take the Pre-IPT Oral test in Spanish to help us understand their language skills better.
To decide on the best placement for your child, parents, teachers, the principal, and the EL Director will work together to review the assessment results.
For preschool students, the screening team will also discuss the language data to help identify and place your child appropriately.
